The true value of our mission lies in how we combine financial support with the deployment of Costa’s own resources – unused goods, surplus food, inventory – while also encouraging stakeholders and employees to get involved in the philanthropy process.
The Costa Foundation’s mission is to provide food and a secure home to the disadvantaged. Costa Crociere’s mission involves serving food and providing accommodation to paying guests. We saw a synergy in this relationship and realized we could re-route surplus items from the business into the hands of the homeless, the hungry and the materially deprived. Reusable assets can therefore be recycled instead of sent to a landfill – one of our key environmental goals being to reduce waste through reuse and people facing hardship helped.
Working between our benefactor and the many charities and NGOs serving the community, as a foundation, our role is to map the material requirements of the latter and match them with the resources Costa can supply…..with as few extra costs as possible.
By recycling essential items, our aim is to relieve material deprivation in disadvantaged communities, at zero cost to the communities or to those helping them. Encouraging other people and businesses to do the same is the first step in building an integrated national system of goods recycling. The bigger the network we can create, the more hungry can be fed, homes furnished and people helped.
Like our other projects, this one will also start in Genoa. We will draw up lists of inventory that Costa has made available for donation, from kitchen supplies and furniture to linens, toys, or even long-life foods. These items may not be suitable for use on board Costa Crociere’s ships anymore, but they are by no means at the end of their life cycle. In a throwaway society like ours, the opportunity to redeploy quality goods to organizations in need has multiple benefits, both ecological and charitable.
As usual, our charity efforts don’t stop at just giving. Every effort we make to help is mirrored by another to mobilize others. By forging a recycling network and redeploying resources, Costa Crociere will inspire its employees, stakeholders and suppliers to do the same.
